WD My Book Mirror
I purchased three WD Mirror hard drives after reading a positive technical review. Installation was easy with Vista 32 and XP. The drives performed exactly as stated and starting backing up all important files automatically. Having this digital security is worthwhile.
Vista 64 is another matter. There was fundamental incompatablity, which WD technical support attempted to resolve. Bottom line - I got the product to install and backup a Vista 64 laptop. The next day the laptop crashed so thoroughly that all Outlook files were destroyed. Clearly an incompatable product. The good news - all those files were there on the WD Mirror and could be recovered. But - Mirror is not compatable with Vista 64. Don't go there. N

Obtained product to run on a MacOSX system. Spent many days putting a lot of data on it, including (legally) ripping my DVD collection and storing it on this device, putting ALL my game files on it, and putting some important work files that I desperately needed to back up, and so on. A lot of data, a lot of time, a lot of effort. This was to be my backup disk. Verified that everything was working, then shut it down, unplugged it, and stored it. A week later, brought it out of storage to verify, and it seemed to be working ok.
45 days later I lost a disk partition on my main drive. Go to restore from this unit - the data cannot be read. The disk is unusable, unrepairable, and inaccessible. I've not only lost several years of data that I thought I had backed up, I've not only lost the time I spent putting my movies on here for backup and easier access, but I'm now stuck with a $380 piece of JUNK that I can't return and cannot trust for even the most basic applications. The only purpose I would now use this drive for is temporary storage, and I don't generate 2 terabytes of temporary files when I work.
WD support is no help whatsoever. Their knowledgebase seems to have been vetted by marketing and is therefore useless. Their "WD Drive Manager" only knows how to WIPE the drive, and does not actually allow you to MANAGE the drive. The partition was so damaged that MacOSX disk utility, that I've seen pull miracles on other corrupt drives, couldn't touch it.
I'd cry, but it's my own damn fault for trusting Western Digital to make a useful product. I knew it was too cheap to be good, and I was right.
Avoid this product at all costs. Go get something by a company that cares about longevity and quality.
